The Line at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen at Seven in the Morning
A drive-through window on Airport Road has been producing the same biscuits for decades. The line at seven a.m. tells you everything you need to know.

What It Is and Why It Has a Queue
Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen sits on East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, a stretch of commercial corridor that runs northeast from the center of town — the functional, unglamorous part of the municipality that most visitors skip entirely. The building is small. The menu is not long. There is no dining room. There is a drive-through window, and from early morning until the biscuits run out, there is a line of cars extending into the parking lot and, on the busiest mornings, into the road itself.
The operation is straightforward: made-from-scratch biscuits, mixed and cut on-site each morning, filled to order with eggs, sausage, chicken, or some combination. The chicken biscuit — a fried chicken thigh, hot and substantial, inside a biscuit with a faintly crisp exterior and a pull-apart interior — is the thing most people are waiting for. The kitchen closes when the biscuits are gone, and the biscuits are sometimes gone before nine.

Chapel Hill carries a serious restaurant culture. Bill Neal's work at Crook's Corner in the early 1980s gave the town a claim on culinary history that still holds. Andrea Reusing has operated Lantern on West Franklin Street with sustained national recognition. The Carrboro Farmers Market draws producers from across Orange County and supports a locavore infrastructure that feeds several of the area's better kitchens. Into this context, Sunrise fits as a different kind of institution — one defined not by its menu's range but by its consistency, its speed, and its refusal to be anything other than what it is.
The queue at seven in the morning is not composed of tourists, for the most part. It is UNC students and faculty, hospital workers from UNC Health coming off a shift, contractors, regulars of long standing who can tell you, with precision, what the line looks like on a Tuesday versus a Saturday. The transaction is efficient. The window produces biscuits at a pace that keeps the line moving. Nobody is lingering.
That is the point. Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen is not a destination in the way that phrase implies browsing or leisure. It is a destination in the older sense: a place people go because that is where the thing is.
